The 8th Open European Mahjong Championship in MCR was held in Uppsala, Sweden over three days between 3-5 July 2026. Denmark was represented by eight members from Mahjong Danmark: Sheila Hansen, Jesper Nøhr, Freddy Christiansen, Henrik Leth, Isabel Bahiano Steenholm, Ting Fang Olsen, and Sebastian Lavallée (as referee). There was a team competition as well, and Denmark was represented by two teams, Danish Red Dragons, with team members, Sheila, Jesper, Freddy, and Henrik, and Baltic White Dragons, with team members, Isabel, Tina, Ting, and a French player, Faustin Voisin
The tournament consisted of eleven rounds. There were 168 participants from all over the world and 42 teams. The tiles we played with were customised, whereby the very well-designed 8 flower tiles depicted the rich cultural heritage of Uppsala and the origins of the game.
It seems to be a tradition to have at least one Dane amongst the top 3 EMA players at OEMC since it was first held in 2005 (with the exception of 2014 and 2017), so 2026 was no different! At OEMC 2023, we had Freddy Christiansen at #3. This year, we did one better with Tina Christensen at #2! Not only that, we also have the Baltic White Dragons at #3 on the team podium. The Danish Red Dragons managed to get a very good result at the end too at #5, despite the rough start in the first two days.
The European Champion of 2026 is Joel Ratsimandresy from France with 31 TP and 1028 MP! For once in the history of the OEMC, we have a tied third place with Marcel Tjon-A-Sam from Netherlands and Marco Montebelli from Italy having 30 TP each and exactly 717 MP.
